Hanoi & Ho Chi Minh City, March 16, 2022 – Co-organized by the Netherlands Embassy in Vietnam and Informa Markets Vietnam, the webinar entitled “HOW TO BECOME A FRONT RUNNER IN E-MOBILITY? Mobilizing Dutch know-how for the future of Vietnam’s mobility” concluded on an upbeat note on March 10, 2022. The virtual event was hailed as a success with more than 172 audiences in attendance.
The webinar brought together relevant businesses, experts, and policy-makers from the e-mobility sector of Vietnam and the Netherlands. Numerous insightful topics were discussed at the webinar, comprising of the current state of e-mobility in Vietnam, the VinFast story, the story of the Netherlands as one of the global front runners in e-mobility, and Dutch know-how in charging and other technologies for electric vehicles (EVs).
To open the webinar, H.E. Ms. Elsbeth Akkerman, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Hanoi Vietnam emphasized “Vietnam and the Netherlands have shared ambitions to become climate neutral and to green our economies. Sustainable mobility will, next to other sectors like renewable energy and energy efficiency, play a key role in that transformation process. We look forward to sharing our Dutch knowledge and experience in the development of electric mobility with Vietnam, between governments, businesses and knowledge institutes. Our ambition is not only to maintain our leading position, but also to cooperate with partners and friends abroad to support the global transformation towards electric mobility. New international cooperation also creates new opportunities. For this reason, we are pleased to invite you to join us on our journey to a zero-emission future.”
The first session welcomed Mr. Filippo Bortoletti, Director Vietnam, Dezan Shira & Associates, where he shed light on Vietnam’s e-mobility and transportation landscape. Although motorbikes are the predominant form of transportation in Vietnam, public consciousness has gradually shifted, and consumers are becoming more aware of their environmental impact, which has helped bolster awareness for EVs. In order for the Vietnamese EV market to thrive, some major challenges need to be addressed such as low investment in EV manufacturing, high prices for EVs and batteries, few charging stations, and lack of trained manpower. According to a poll in the webinar, 59% of participants found that a more widely available charging infrastructure is most needed for the development of e-mobility in Vietnam to take off, while 33% thought that the Government incentives for EV ownership is the most important.
Mr. Emiel Hendriksen, Vice President, B2B Sales, VinFast Europe continued the webinar with the sharing of VinFast story. Following its US debut at the 2021 LA Auto Show, VinFast is taking important steps towards a sustainable future of mobility, focusing its R&D efforts on all-electric powertrains for their vehicles. This bold move makes VinFast one of the world’s first automotive companies to completely switch to pure electric, affirming its position as a leader in the global EV revolution.
The webinar was followed by a presentation by Mr. Baerte de Brey, Vice President of The European Association for Electromobility, where he discussed the best practices of the Netherlands as one of the global front runners in e-mobility. The Netherlands is among the top 5 countries whose EVs make up the highest percentage of their passenger car fleets. Also, the Netherlands is leading in regards to the density of charging points; it boasts the highest number of public EV charging points in Europe, with nearly one charger available for every 2km of roads. The Dutch best practices to achieve the above are smart EV rollout, smart EV charging infrastructure, interoperability in EV charging networks, and investments for R&D.
In the next session, a number of Dutch companies came together to shed light on the Dutch know-how in EV charging and other technologies. Speaking at the session were representatives of Allego – a global provider of charging solutions for cities, companies and consumers (Mr. Harold Langenberg Business Development Director), ; Eco- Movement – the leading data platform for EV charging stations (Mr. Sjors Martens Commercial Director); and HERE Technologies – the world’s leading company on location intelligence for sustainable mobility (Mr. Abhijit Head of Business, Southeast Asia and India).
The webinar concluded with a Q&A session among participants and speakers on emerging challenges and issues of Vietnam’s e-mobility market, moderated by Mr. Christoph Prommersberger, Deputy Head of Mission, the Netherlands Embassy Vietnam. The webinar not only showed the promising developments of EVs in Vietnam but also the potentials for Dutch-Vietnamese cooperation in this sector. The most interested areas including charging hardware, software and services; and EV components and technologies. Others include ready-built electric vehicles; and knowledge and consultancy services. Stay tuned for the next activities by the Netherlands Embassy in Vietnam to together realize these potentials.
Co-organized by the Netherlands Embassy in Vietnam and Informa Markets Vietnam, the webinar is part of the pre-event activities of Vietnam’s International Power Generation, Transmission, Distribution & Renewable Energy Exhibition & Conference – Electric & Power Vietnam 2022, taking place on September 7-9, 2022 at Saigon Exhibition & Convention Center (SECC).
